Creating a Freedom-Based Business: From OT Burnout to Life on Your Terms
Feb 10, 2025
In this blog, we explore the journey of occupational therapist-turned-entrepreneur Brittany Ferri, who transitioned from burnout to building a freedom-based business. In a candid conversation with me, Beki Eakins, Brittany shares her inspiring story, offering tips for OTs looking to redesign their careers, align with their values, and embrace a life of flexibility.
The OT Burnout Dilemma
Occupational therapy is deeply rewarding but often demanding — especially for those working in mental health or heavy clinical settings. For Brittany, early-career burnout in a traditional mental health role led her to question her future:
“I was putting a lot in and not getting much back in terms of reward. I started looking for other options but felt stuck because I didn’t know there was anything beyond clinical care.”
Her story echoes the experience of many OTs who hit a wall with burnout. However, rather than accept defeat, Brittany sought creative ways to leverage her skills.
Finding the Spark: From Clinical Care to Writing
Brittany began writing as a stress reliever, and what started as a side hobby soon evolved into a viable career:
“Writing was always something I loved — organising my thoughts, creating clarity. I started getting great feedback, and I realised it could become a real part of my work life.”
She initially wrote blogs aimed at providers, focusing on tips for new grads, documentation, and productivity. Over time, she transitioned into patient-focused content, writing educational material for clinics and hospitals — work that she now finds incredibly rewarding.
Creating a Freedom-Based Business
Transitioning to a freedom-based business is rarely an overnight decision. For Brittany, it involved steady steps: exploring freelance opportunities, building a network, and overcoming the isolation of working alone. However, the flexibility of her career has allowed her to design her business around her needs.
“There’s such power in being able to adapt your work to suit your life — whether it’s for health reasons, family, or simply enjoying time in nature.”
This adaptability has been invaluable, particularly as Brittany manages her health condition (endometriosis). The ability to schedule rest or adjust deadlines ensures her wellbeing remains a priority.
The Role of Organisation and Self-Alignment
What sets Brittany apart is her natural organisation — a skill she believes is key for success as a freelancer:
“I thrive on organisation. I do brain-dumps of ideas and translate them into plans. It keeps me motivated and on track.”
For those who struggle with chaos, Brittany’s advice is to find systems that work for you. Your version of organisation doesn’t need to be “cookie-cutter” perfect — just enough to create flow and clarity.
Advice for OTs Seeking Change
If you’re an OT experiencing burnout or considering a shift, Brittany offers this guidance:
- Focus on What You Can Control:
“You don’t have to leave your job immediately. Start planning while you’re still working. Research, test ideas, and take small steps forward.”
2. Explore Your Zone of Genius:
“Lean into what feels natural and enjoyable for you. For Brittany, this was writing, but for you, it might be coaching, education, or something entirely different.”
3. Stay Connected:
“Reach out to like-minded communities, like the Non-Clinical PT or coaching services that can support your transition.”
Final Words of Inspiration
“Burnout isn’t the end — it can actually be the beginning. When you’ve had everything laid bare, it gives you clarity to find what truly fits and create a life of alignment and purpose.”
