Danger on the Island

There's been little excitement on the Australia trip as it's all been so easy. I thought I wanted safe and easy as my first trip taking the kids without their dad. I slotted into family life by living with my sister. Bought a car instead of renting. Had my brother and sister to guide us on everything. Then with Australia being so like the UK in terms of culture and experience, I've not felt that buzz.

So when a camping trip to an island was mentioned I was all ears. Off roading on Fraser Island and staying at a campsite was going to be a bit different.

At first we were shocked heading into Brisbane. It was suddenly very cold and we all needed jumpers. But also it was even busier than Cairns. I struggle to get excited about beaches with buildings on, to me it just feels like a ruined beach.

Heading to Fraser island had many challenges. You have to hire a 4x4, the company swapped it at the last minute and it wasn't big enough to hold our food. We were delayed in our trip and there were many other challenges.

But finally making it on the island and driving down the highway (the beach) immediately made me feel happier. The not knowing where we were going, having to navigate on bumpy, sandy paths. We saw a ship wreck on the side of the beach road. We passed planes and then at one point there was a plane heading straight for us and it just took off right by the side of our car. So much fun.

When we arrived at the campsite we were greeted by a Goanna right by our tent. A beautiful lizard who hung around. This was a welcome treat for my son and he immediately felt happier. We also spotted a venomous redback spider by our tents which we were not so happy to see but glad we avoided getting bitten.

We went an evening walk, sticks in our hands because the dingoes have apparently been trying to attack children recently. We found a beautiful path involving miles of sand dunes as the sun was setting. It was so much fun and we spotted dingo footprints which made it more exciting.

During the days we tried to navigate the sandy paths, not get the car stuck in the ditches and every few hours we could get out to find white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters.

It's times like these when I'm reminded that I need a daily dose of excitement. It's when you reach to things outside of my control and sense of safety that the deeper excitement is felt. I like to feel alive and know I am living my best life. Hanging around my comfort zone is a safe place that's very tempting so it's good to have a reminder of this! It is also why I cannot have a job that feels safe and boring. Recognising that I need excitement and stimulation in my daily life was crucial to me developing a life and business I love!
